Resumo:

This paper intends to establish a relation between the diameter and number of ovocites and the stage of gonadal development, and to obtain the weight/length ratio and the condition factor of Litopenaeus schmitti shrimps captured in the oceanic area of Baixada Santista, State of São Paulo, Brazil. The catches were effected in the period between June 2005 and May 2006, being performed one catch per month. In each slide, 5 ovocites were measured, and afterwards the average ovocite diameter in each stage was calculated. For an estimation of the average length in the first gonadal maturation, the immature females were considered young and those in other stages of ovarian maturation (maturing, mature and spawned) were considered adult. After capturing 1,130 individuals, examples were identified in the four stages of gonadal maturation, being 9.4% immature, 63% developing, 21.1% mature, and 6.6% empty. The average diameter (µm) of ovocites was 105,625 in immature, 128,981 in developing and 191,576 in mature. The ovarian maturation in different months of the year, the spawning period was located between June and February, with an insinuated peak in winter (August) and another, clear one, in spring-summer (December-January). The comparison between macroscopic and microscopic analyses of the gonads has indicated the validity of the ovarian maturation classification, in the stages denominated: immature, developing, mature and empty.
